Spouse support is the part of global mobility that decides whether an assignment holds. Yet it is the most misunderstood. Here is a clear definition, what it includes, and why it matters.

What is spouse support? (Definition)

Spouse support — also called partner support or accompanying-partner support — is the structured help given to the spouse or partner of a relocated employee so they can settle into a new country and build their own life there. It covers four things: the local language, the cultural codes, a real social and professional network, and the partner's own career project. The goal is autonomy.

In one sentence: spouse support turns the accompanying partner from a passenger of the assignment into an author of their new life.

What spouse support includes

  • Language — practical command of the local language for everyday life and work.

  • Cultural codes — how the city and the country actually work, learned on the ground.

  • Network and community — a trusted circle of peers and locals from the first weeks.

  • Career project — coaching to relaunch the partner's professional path: CV, local job market, networking.

What spouse support is not

Spouse support is not a relocation service and it is not only a language course. A relocation agency handles the move — visa, housing, logistics. A language school teaches the language. Spouse support starts after the boxes are unpacked, when the partner is alone with a new city, and it connects language, culture, network and career into one path toward autonomy.

Why spouse support matters

Spousal dissatisfaction is the single biggest reason international assignments fail (Permits Foundation). A failed assignment costs a company between €750k and €1.5m once you count relocation, lost productivity, and replacement (Permits Foundation). Most assignments that break, break around day 90.

At Absolutely French and Absolutely American, retention reaches 100% when the partner is supported. Since 2015 we have integrated 1,350+ expats and partners across 80+ nationalities, with a 97% completion rate and an NPS of 9.7/10 in 2025.

How spouse support works: our method

We work in person, in small groups of 4 to 7, along four pillars — language, cultural codes, network, career project. Each partner moves at their own pace. The sequence is always the same: autonomy, confidence, impact. Help the partner, and you secure the assignment.

Spouse support vs relocation vs language school

  • Relocation agency — moves the family: visa, housing, logistics. Ends once installed.

  • Language school — teaches the language. One skill, one channel.

  • Spouse support — builds a whole life: language, culture, network and career together, until the partner is autonomous.

Case study: L'Oréal

L'Oréal has partnered with Absolutely French since 2018 to integrate the partners of its expatriates in Paris — French language, cultural integration, network, and career support, in person, in small groups.

  • Partner since 2018.

  • NPS 9.7/10 in 2025.

  • 100% retention of expatriates whose partner is supported.

  • Hundreds of partners integrated in France through the program.

What participants and HR say

In the 2026 satisfaction survey,

L'Oréal participants gave the program an NPS of 9.75/10,

with overall impact rated 8.9/10 and

daily-life autonomy 9.2/10.

Absolutely French has been a key part of my integration into France. Being part of a welcoming class made it easier to ask questions about the culture, build vocabulary, and gain confidence in speaking. Starting classes immediately upon arriving made a real difference — it was reassuring to have a group to connect with and share experiences with others going through a similar transition.

— Georgia Sakurai, L'Oréal

The fact that classes are focused on speaking and understanding, and less on writing, makes a big difference for me. It is focused on quickly bringing benefits into your everyday life. I could answer the phone and book appointments by myself — and no fear about it!

— Johnny, expat partner
